WHAT THE EFF MOZILLA?!?!?!?

I'm not even bothering reading the Google Groups discussion, but please! I thought Mozilla had "blacklisted" H264 on the desktop because it was not universal and because it was harmful to have a closed codec dominate the web!

And now they are going to support it on Android? What the hell Mozilla? The mobile web is already lousy with its lack of variety and bigger and bigger restraining to closed components, and you want to take it further?!?!? Get WebM on the mobile! Make use of the freaking hardware chip, but don't make things worse!

Sorry, but I had to rant. I am all for using the system codecs on the browser (less work, the people get more video support if the browser bundles the codec installer), but I don't think supporting H264 on such a crippled web will do any good.

Just another sign that WebKit is the new IE6.
Chrome is overtaking Firefox and Mozilla are being forced to comply.

I had been thinking along this path a while now. Looks like there's less room for doubt, to a considerable degree.

Chrome is overtaking Firefox and Mozilla are being forced to comply.

Mozilla brought us a unique product that worked better. Then they decided to make a product that would appeal to a wider audience and work just as well as everything else.

They amassed a following with their unique, high-bar product.

They are losing following with their generic, median-standard product.

IMO, this is just more proof that in the end, finding a good fit within the right niche is by *far* a more effective business strategy than trying to appeal to "the masses." I wonder why they don't teach this in night classes -- let alone university business curricula.

This makes me think - what if Google had opted not to base either The Android Browser or Chromium on WebKit?

There where ofcourse many reasons why WebKit was a better choice, but webkit would certainly not be the new IE6.
