Why would you even *want* Mountain Lion.. ?

I don't even... I'm at a loss of words. What advantages outweigh such blatant disregard for actual computing? Can someone explain Apple to me? Not saying Microsoft is heading in a better direction, but still -- two wrongs don't make a right, do they.

If you haven't, try OpenSUSE + KDE at least once. Maybe it's more work, maybe has less shiny stuff, but at least they don't troll their users :P

Right -- just everyone else. ;D

I actually have an OpenSUSE DVD coming in the mail in a few days (along with Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Fedora DVDs), so I'll get to check it out very soon. I have a borked (until I deborked it) Eee Box that I'm lo0king to turn into a private Web server running Linux.

I wouldn’t use Linux, I’d prefer BSD if I were to switch, but I’ve already decided I’m better off selling the Mac and maximising my time on more important things than taking the time to learn and set up a new OS.

Files on Lion and Mountain Lion are continually auto-saved. The author of the article makes it sound like 'Save As' is to blame for this behaviour, which isn't the case. He wasn't thinking, mucked up, and then wrote about his escapade in exasperation.

I guess they could've named it something else to avoid confusion. 'Duplicate and Save under a different name'. Or something.

I know, and I'm still laughing :P

So if you want to save a modified version of a new file, you have to make a copy first, then make edits. Ahuh. What if you didn't know you were going to save under a new name when you started editing? I still don't see the use of it. It's an improvement for people who loose files because they get distracted or whatever, but for, uhm, power users? I know when I have unsaved files and why, there is always a good reason for it.

Well, then, I dare say you're screwed, my good man.

I still don't see the use of it.

There's not much use; they just wanna get everything you type into your computer 'on the cloud' in the long (or, short) run.

Power users aren't gonna be using TextEdit, if we're honest.

I'm not sure I understand what you all are talking about with Lion and Mountain Lion. I read the article - http://macperformanceguide.com/MountainLion-SaveAs-data-destruction.html - and I'm still unclear.

Can someone clear this up?

Peace.

I can't remember who said (or where it was I read it) that the logical reasoning behind these changes to the "document model" in Lion, then Mountain Lion is that Apple are trying to slowly push all Apple users to 'always in the cloud' and changing to save-by-default is necessary for keeping tight sync between devices.

This who Save As cock up is because the engineers must have themselves got temporarily confused over how files are "supposed" to be managed on OS X now.

No sir, I don't like it.

I think they finally fixed this… I don’t really use any software with auto-saving and I don’t make use of Duplicate / Save As. But I thought I might put this up here, as I am not the only Mac user on this forum: https://support.apple.com/kb/HT5460

• Adds an option to discard the changes in the original document when choosing Save As

It doesn’t seem to make things easier (adding an option? Save As should just be Save As.) But a fix is a fix.
