...but in this case I think it added to the "WTF ?" moment of watching the clip of Money for Nothing for the first time.

Also see Pulp's "Common People" and Pet Shop Boy's "Go West" for early CG in music videos.
A lot of the early 3D was very, very rough and it's surprising that any of it was shipped at all, I suppose it was just novel. The CGI intro in Theme Hospital is just as bad as that music video clip.
But to put it in to perspective, graphics like that video were what on guy could do on an Amiga, the CG in the film industry has stood up surprisingly well for a technology that has developed so rapidly. It still bends my mind that Toy Story was 1995! Most home users would still have been using Windows 3.1 .
Other films that have stood up are The Abyss, 1989 and Terminator 2, 1991. Again, you put them in prespective of the average computer technology available at the time and it's astonishing they managed to make anything at all.
In the video game industry, there was much hype but it wasn't until the Playstation that 3D had really establishd the baseline, almost all of the early 3D games from 1992-1995 have been lost to history as unplayable, except for Doom and early MMOs like Merdian 59 / Everquest.
Some 3D games have aged very well. Blizzard has figured it out. Take a look at WOW.
Since they are shooting for cartoon, and not realism, they can use a visual style that was developed the better part of a decade ago. Poly count matters less, and things like adding bloom or reflections or weather and so on matter much more.
Come to think of it, TF2 and Wind Waker pulled the same trick.
