Request: Post editing (after posting)

append delete oldtimes

I have been using NoNonsense Forum on my own server now about 6 months and it is great!

For me it is just a simple but fast and nice tool to blog my notes and projects (and let other people comment the notes). Now after regular use, I have noticed that I really would like to have the option to correct / edit my messages after posting. Ofc I could open my emacs and edit the datafiles directly, but web UI would be so much better.

Wait!? You’ve been running a NNF forum for six months and haven’t told me!? Can I see it!?

Because the text -> HTML conversion is one way, there will never be an edit command because I wouldn’t be able to turn the HTML back to the markup it came from in a reliable / sane manner and that would be over-engineering anyway.

I am planning to add the ability to append to existing posts. This should solve most requirements whilst keeping the engineering down.

Since you’ve been running a forum you should have some experience with the general design, please consider filing bugs and requests on GitHub: github.com/… Doing so makes me work on it. You can thank all this recent activity on Jonhoo for commenting and filing bugs like a man possessed.

I think all the texts are in finnish but sure, take a look. :)

When I saw the c-64 theme of your forum, I was sold. Later it started to annoy me because of readability and some characters such as ä and ö look bad with that c-64 default font. (As they did look awful in original c-64 as well!)

About my forum:
Not that much real content as it is more like small (but quick!) blogging page for me to write short descriptions of my work, projects, hobbies etc.

I haven't found really bugs since everything has worked so smoothly for me. With the c-64 theme, there was that annoying "chrome-paste bug" github.com/… and actually it was me who reported it.
Huh, it was so annoying bug that I had to try to solve it by myself with my non-existing pre-year-2000 html-coding skills. Removing that one css line did the job, no idea what was the purpose, since nothing broke down.

But sure, I'll report problems and suggestions to Github if I notice any bugs or develop some amazing ideas. :)

Nice to have ability to append posts, that is better than nothing. It is not extremely important to me, but would be a quite nice feature. And finally: Thanks for the very nice forum software!

Oh, I almost forgot to mention that i have second NNs forum running in certain project intranet, where it serves as a small bulletin board for co-workers. Useful tool!

Nice! Interesting use of the forums.

Make sure that you keep the code up to date, the version you are running is old. If you are not already, you should subscribe to the project updates on GitHub where I explain all the changes happening to the code. You could also checkout from git to your webroot so that updating to the latest version is just a simple git pull. Be aware that sometimes I purposefully break things so always follow the commit messages! I’ve recently changed the file extensions around for feeds.

I'm running the version before this sudden burst of updates. :)

I usually check the Github page maybe once a week to see if there are any important security fixes. Now when I noticed that there are constant changes, I intentionally left the system as it is now and didn't update the software. Usually I upgrade NNs quite fast, but now decided to wait more quieter times. :)

It would be easier to use automated update mechanism. So far I have been doing that manually. So far the installation and upgrades have been almost trivial. I suppose I must check later how that Git pull works.

Yes, git pull basically is an update mechanism. It will do the renames / adds / deletes all for you, you only need to read the commits and note any changes to your config / data files you may need to do.

I believe the way the stackexhange network allows edits is by keeping both the source of the post and the generated HTML saved. Would you be opposed to a similar feature for NNF?

append delete #7. Kroc

Yes, yes I would.

At the moment, all data fits within the standard RSS fields. If I had to store the plaintext representation too, I would have to break the RSS spec and I can’t see the point of the extra engineering to do all this when appends are "good enough" for most purposes. The posts that matter the most when it comes to "correctness" are usually the OP, in which case, if you make a major mistake, just delete the thread and re-post.
