RSS isn't going away because it's integrated into too many other delivery services. I'm thinking mostly about podcasts, but there are other things that go out that way too. Most content that can be viewed in other devices or apps comes that way so it's not really practical to get rid of the underlying RSS.

Actually I found your whole post a little confusing because I never use my browser as a feed reader. I'd be a little surprised if many people who follow more than a couple feeds do. Maybe it's partly the fault of the browser interfaces, but the main reason I'm not going to use Chrome or Firefox to manage my feeds is that I'm not tied to one computer or browser and I don't really want to be. I don't think most laypeope will ever have the need for the amount of content management that I regularly engage in so they will never have the same use for RSS feeds that I do. I don't think making the buttons in the browser different will change that.
