server side browsers

append delete orta

There's been some interesting work by Opera to make the browser client more of a server with Opera Unite ( unite.opera.com/… )

Though this is all client side, it'd be fascinating to see it done browser side. The closest that I know of on this respect has been the unhosted project (unhosted.org )

Phantomjs works pretty well for us:
code.google.com/…

Watij didn't work that well, but maybe only in our case:
watij.com

I would suggest the opposite. Client only and peer to peer technology.

The only way for the web to remain free from Comcast, Google, Apple is to make dedicated servers optional.

What I’m proposing is that we replace PHP with a web browser so that the code we run on the server can be the same code we run on the client.

That will eventually *lead to* decentralised applications, but in the mean time will simply lay the groundwork for it whilst people continue with the centralised model.

You cannot take two steps at once, we must make centralised apps use pretty much the same technologies as decentralised ones first, then coax developers over.

Jaxer (jaxer.org) was pretty close to what you're suggesting. It was a headless Firefox that ran JavaScript on the server and proxied its server methods to the client. I wish it had caught on more.

Jaxer still thinks too much like the server is something special, with its own code and own way to do things. We need more equality here and to stop treating servers as anything different than clients.

Opera does something like this for years, just check their opera mini.

@Michael That’s not for developers to write serverside applications using the same client technologies they are used to.

I was reminded of the php compilers and IDEs and for example the software products found at nusphere.com

Interesting idea, Kroc.
