Testing new theme for default distribution

append delete Kroc

Oh look, everything’s different! If you are using Jose Pedro Arvela’s user style, please disable it for now--my forums will return to the C=64 theme after a while.

This new theme "greyscale" is a generic theme for all users downloading the code and running their own forums. The C=64 theme was always intended to be unique to Camen Design and it won’t be provided any more outside of this site.

The theme is designed to be simple, adaptable and to have a wide-range of browser and device support. I’m still working on that though. I will be updating the theme here live as I work in support for IE, mobile devices and printers &c.

When I have satisfied those requirements, I may consider creating colour alternates for the theme, much like old Apple iMacs. I could do with some Tangerine Dreams!

If you have any suggestions, feedback or any code to contribute, please reply to this thread, or better yet file a bug / fork the code at the GitHub repository: github.com/…

Many thanks has to go to Jon Gjengset @ thesquareplanet.com for getting the ball rolling by creating the Grayscale theme of which this new theme is based on. I would never have got this theme done without his care and interest in the code.

Ah, good idea. I'm guessing people may have been turned off by the c64 style's readability. This is a nice default style. My head almost exploded when I first saw it though - I was using Jose's user style, hehe.

Very nice! I quite like it. :)

The C=64 scheme is quite nostalgic for me, but this theme is much more clean and "modern". Thumbs up!

I just love this theme! I actually already made a backup of the stylesheet, as I'll want to implement it when the style moves back (I like C64's appearance, but it hurts my eyes to read long snippets of text in it) (don't worry, I'll make it available in here if I manage to make it work).

@Jose Pedro Arvela the latest version of this theme will always be available in the GitHub code: github.com/…

I like this theme a lot. I just have one small complaint:

The Name and Password boxes are really strange. There is no border between them and the Message box, and the space between the name box and password box looks like it's sticking out. I think a bit of grey border between these two areas would make it a bit more usable and less confusing at first...

It'd be easy for the users, if there's a difference between visited and not visited links.

Something like

a:visited{
font-weight:normal;
}

in the CSS?

Appending the count of replies in the url will make the links bold again, when a new reply comes.

You can no longer change the style of visited links due to CSS-exposed history privacy issues. You can only change the colour :(

Yeah, there would be a lot of loopholes if you could style visited links in other ways. Although the DOM can't see the real computed style of visited links, you could still indirectly see the effects of a visited link on its surrounding elements. For example, if you did "<div><a href="whatever"></a></div>" with "a:visited { display: block; height: 1000px; }", you could then check the divs computed height to see if its greater than 1000 pixels.

Personally, I wish browsers made the :visited limitations opt-in. I don't care whether someone can figure out what websites I visit. I have nothing to hide. I don't know if most people actually care about these things. (For ~95% of the websites I visit, I have scripts disabled anyway.)

Hello,

I simply adore this new theme for its clean and modern look. I have, however, found a few details that I'd like to mention, that relate to the alignment.

dl.dropbox.com/…
dl.dropbox.com/…

I have marked the grid for areas in header and footer which I believe should be indented additionally to achieve balance and flow with the rest of the content.

That'd be all for now, I'll post more feedback once I explore the new layout further!

Sorry if I was unclear there, I forgot that I have planned to write about the "issues" - align the "add thread/reply/RSS" links and the search box to the line to achieve that they don't fall out on the side. Also, apply some left positioning to the index link and icon so it aligns with other titles and icons in the same axis and add some left padding to achieve the same effect in the footer.

append delete #11. Kroc

Well spotted Nikolai, I shall work on those issues. I am currently fighting with IE6 at the moment, but those alignment issues will be fixed at some point, I have created a bug for reference on GitHub: github.com/…

If you have more feedback, consider submitting your findings as issues on the GitHub project (github.com/… as I can then keep track of them and tick off fixes as I go. Spit and polish and niggley little problems matter to me just as much as the big ones.

Forum looks great! :)
The reply section is little confusing for the first time!

Kroc working hard to ensure a design works in IE6? Now I've seen it all !

append delete #14. Kroc

You shouldn't be surprised. I can hack IE6 with the best of them, it is a matter of choice; know your audience. This theme is designed for all users on all devices and to focus on making discussion possible, rather than preaching web standards.

append delete #15. JJ

Yeah, I know. I was largely joking. :)

append delete #16. sull

nice.

Looks great. I have to agree with Zifre (comment #6) though. The reply box does feel oddly meshed together.

Hmmm, I don't seem to be able to make a new post, it just keeps saying to fill in the title to the new thread. I just put in a title, my post, and then try to submit, but it keeps saying I have to fill in the title. I hope I can post this post, otherwise it's on to the old fashion e-mail :)

I’d just like to say to everybody that in the last three days, lots of work has been done on polishing the new theme; you may have noticed some small adjustments. Jonhoo was kind enough to donate the beginnings of a mobile-optimised skin and this will require much improvement and testing.

If there is anything you would like to see done, or anything you feel you can contribute with a few lines of code, please examine the issues list and consider adding yours or fixing an existing bugbear: github.com/…
