"Web Languages" Pet Peeves

append delete Jose Pedro Arvela

Every person has their own way to code. Every person writes unique HTML, unique CSS and unique JavaScript. And obviously, each person writes these in a way unique to them, and might choose a method over another, most times because of their own way of being. Just like Kroc says "Code is art" and I add that art is an expression of ourselves, and therefore so is code.

Due to this uniqueness in each one of us, I sometimes get almost lunatic when seeing seemingly little and irrelevant characteristics in other people's code. These are choices, decisions each person does and, because we are all a little obsessive compulsive on the inside, these cause other people to go insane.

So tell me, what makes you go insane over HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, or whatever other language, or specific decisions over the web for no apparent reason?

---

In HTML, I have two things (I can recall) that make me go insane without reason:

First, I can't absolutely stand self closing tags without XHTML notation. That is, I do <br /> and not <br>, even in normal HTML. I almost go insane when seeing line break or image tags without the self closing notation from XHTML. It is a freaky need to close everything opened, and it goes to the edge of the absurd.

Second, I can't absolutely stand seeing line breaks when the appropriate thing to use are paragraph tags. When I was designing the userstyle I made for this forum, I noticed the line break tags and almost got insane. I know most forums use these to provide the users with a more close to rich text editors style of breaks, but I find it unbearable nonetheless. Since I found out about the use of line breaks in these forum's posts, I am wondering, whether or not to do a post about an alternative option I thought of to replace those unbearable line breaks.

In CSS, I need to have spaces between properties, property names and property values, selectors. I can perfectly use CSS without these spaces, but I need it. I also need to have the closing bracket on another line, although I can perfectly code without that requirement. (I also do not like to put all properties in one line, but that is for legibility reasons)

I am not experienced enough in JavaScript or PHP for having acquired pet peeves I know of...

---

So, these are the pet peeves I have that I can recall now (yes, I am that lunatic). So, what are you pet peeves?

Ah, magic quotes are on. Add this to the .htaccess:

"php_flag magic_quotes_gpc off"

I meant to say, add that to the htaccess instead of using stripslashes.*

Thanks for that JJ, should be fixed now.
