I do not think this is Kroc lol. :/ As Krocs name on the forum is Kroc. But the thread creators name is _Kroc looooooool. But good try :).
Kroc's spelling and grammar -- though it leaves a bit to be desired -- is also much better than the gibberish there. if you're gonna try and fool me, you're gonna have to put a lot more effort into things for sure. :)
Høw abøut like this, theraje? I’m øbviøusly nøt Krøc.
I apologise for faking your name, Kroc, hope you’ll forgive me ;-)
Let me just make very clear that this was a trick and I do not have access to Kroc’s account or password in anyway. Neither do I condone people trying to impersonate other users.
Yes, I know it's possible to fake names quite easily. That's why the CSS has the option to highlight mods names (like underscore). I just don't use it here as I don't want to appear to be lording it over you with special status.
The solution would be to restrict usernames to ASCII only, but then that would be unfair on international users, especially for non-Latin scripts.
Ultimately, the reason I allow such name spoofing to be possible is because NNF is designed for smaller, tighter communities, many times private, where everybody knows each other and isn't inclined to be forging identities in the first place. The humans in your system are just as much a part of the code as what goes on the server-side.
NNF would never scale to the size of random anonymous internet users that descend upon places like minecraftforum.net, so why waste time trying to make it work for that kind of community in the first place? Know thy patrons.
If you've suggestions or some points to discuss regarding spoofing, please feel free to shoot us the breeze and I'd enjoy discussing it. Maybe there is a solution somewhere to this?
Put a dot next to each name, generate a random color based on the checksum of the username (use it as seed for the RNG). Or even more than one color, and concentric rings.
It's an idea -- I'm not saying it's a good idea :D
All possible to do at the theme.php level, so not necessary to be core to NNF (it already provides a CSS hook for all mod names), but I like the thinking.
That gives me an idea though. It's not great, but we could generate a short hash for each name and place it as a tooltip on the user name, so you could double check if names were different just by mousing over them.
I started a bug about it on GitHub: https://github.com/Kroc/NoNonsenseForum/issues/175
Included a first suggestion with a little research behind it. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of software that takes these things into account so not a lot to learn from either.
If anyone here on the forum knows about web development, fonts, or Unicode please head over there and chime in! Programming knowledge is not required, we just need to unearth and get a feel for the problem first: what kind of invisible characters are there? Which of those can safely be removed? How are different languages effected?
I also like the hash idea, doesn’t 4chan use something like that?
This is why i think name banning would be great. Because it would stop guys from trying to fake a moderators name. But i think NNF can work for any size of forum or community. I have been so happy with it. I think all you need to be is a good moderator. All you have to do it delete bad posts/topics. And NNF makes all this very simple. I can not fault it once. But i do think that name banning is the only thing it really needs. ;)
@SteTaylor, the problem – and the reason why name banning alone is no solution – is that there are literally unlimited different names to make. I can add any number of invisible characters to a name: 1, or 2, or 3, or 4, or 5, or … You get the point.
It is simply annoying to ban a spoof-name just to see a new one pop-up. And this new one will look *exactly* the same. Your forum users will not see the difference between the previously banned name and the newly spoofed one.
Well the only other way i could think. Is to bring in a IP banning system :/. But if a bad post comes up i just delete it or lock it. Seems to work great at the min. But it would be great to have that extra help.
Putting the Unicode issue aside, we all know that name-banning is not a _solution_; it's just a _tool_. `:)` "Banning" is the wrong word to use entirely, so it won't appear anywhere in the interface. 'Preventing names from being re-used' is useful for managing spam-bots and unsavoury names.
A full IP-based banning system might appear far in the future, but ultimately it's up to the forum-admin to be able to manage their site and community.
I agree 100% :). Its like i said before. It just a lazy admin who can not delete posts lol. And it will be great to have name banning!. It will slow them down and it will be a great tool. :) Thanks Kroc.
good for you
