Competition: Pitch Your Game Idea [Prizes!] CLOSED -- results pending

append delete Kroc

Hello all. To bring some excitement to the community I’m holding a competition with prizes to be won! If you intend to participate, please read this post fully and carefully, thanks.

*Goal:* You must pitch your idea for an original computer game to the judges. We will be judging on originality, gameplay mechanics, potential and conciseness of your pitch (short, clear and vivid vs. rambling and incoherent :P)

*Time:* The competition will run from now until midday GMT June 1st

*Judges:* Kroc, theraje

*Prizes:* I am giving away three copies of Minecraft http://minecraft.net to the best three entries posted. If you already own Minecraft, you’ll be able to give your prize to a friend instead.

*Rules:*

• The game idea must be original and not based on any existing franchise or characters

• You can pitch more than one game idea (please do so separately, and not in the same thread), but can only win one prize

• You may use any tools at your disposal. You may include images and videos in your pitch, but this will not influence the judges’ decision: A concise, well described game concept can easily beat a well presented, bad idea

• Your game idea can be intended for any platform (e.g. PC, games consoles, retro &c.) even currently non-existent ones (though this is riskier to convey clearly) but must be a "computer game" as is commonly understood

*How to Participate:*

Please post your game idea as it’s own thread on these forums, prefixing the title with "Game Idea: "

Your thread can then act as a question and answer discussion for the judges and readers.

Note that NNF has a 50’000 character limit on the input form. Consider that your pitch-limit.

*Criteria:*

Judging will be based on these criteria:

• Originality: concepts or gameplay mechanics that are new and unseen, novel, exciting and imaginative

• Gameplay: A game that ultimately sounds engrossing and fun to play, rather than more of a chore

• Potential: The ability for the game idea to break new ground and excite people, what we feel could potentially become a big hit

• Conciseness of your pitch: Is this pitch short, clear, and to-the-point?

---

This thread will be for questions and answers about the competition, please remember to post your pitches in new threads and not here.

Kroc added on

Competition is now closed, thanks everybody for participating. Me and theraje will be working on the judging over the next couple of days.

Results are now here, should anybody be looking at this thread in the future: http://forum.camendesign.com/competition_pitch_your_game_idea_results_

The game idea must be original and not based on any existing franchise or characters

Taking inspiration from existing work is still allowed, I hope :)

append delete #2. Kroc

Can you elaborate? Assumedly yes. I mean, there's nothing stopping you wanting to pitch an RPG, but you couldn’t pitch a new Final Fantasy game, and nor can you "mary sue".

append delete #3. Neolander

If in a game, there's a particular idea that's not a defining part of the game, but strikes you as being great and under-exploited, is taking inspiration from this idea allowed ?

Neolander added on

(As for Mary Sue, I have yet to fully understand that concept :) It seems to me that this name designates a character that the writer is extremely fond of and/or has put a lot of himself in, but I've yet to be sure)

append delete #4. Kroc

Yes, we’re not expecting the whole entire game is completely mind-blowingly unique. If you can take an existing genre and add a twist, that’s plenty valid. Art is theft after all.

Kroc added on

Mary Sue is best known from the Sonic fandom. It means creating a character which has a great over-importance in an existing, established canon. Such as creating a character that is Sonic’s girlfriend. Another aspect of Mary Sues is extremes of power, such as making them as a hyper-dimensional being with the power to destroy worlds.

Ah, this "keep it short" rule truly kills me :)

It’s there to ensure that people don’t over work themselves in fear of not being able to compete with other’s ideas.

If you’ve got an idea, but it’s complex to explain, try writing a draft and then keep revising it until you can express it more clearly. Sometimes you just have to write something, no matter how bad, just to get a better sense of the way to explain it clearly. You could also try posting something, and then readers can ask questions and help you refine your explanation. You can then always re-draft and post it again in an improved form.

A note to all contestants, you don’t have to get it perfectly right the first time. Delete and repost as many times as is necessary to hone the text.

Well, I've completed a review of my game, which proved to be the easiest way to work on its design :) Now, the question is, is a review a legit form of pitch, or should I convert it to some more common first-person marketing speak written by the author of the game ? ^^

append delete #8. Kroc

It’s the judges you’ve got to appeal to. Whatever you think is best, if you’re posting it third-person then that’s an original take, as long as it conveys the idea clearly.

Are mobile game ideas allowed or only desktop?

append delete #10. Kroc

Any gaming platform, including mobile.

One week left. Can I have a show of hands of anybody who is intending to participate but hasn’t finished their pitch yet? I’m beginning to worry this is going to be a complete flop. Not enough lurkers yet.

append delete #12. cthom06

I'll be participating. Refining my pitch still.

append delete #13. Kroc

You might win a prize by default, even if you pitched a game about balancing bananas :P

append delete #14. cthom06

even if you pitched a game about balancing bananas

WHO TOLD YOU MY GAME IDEA?!

In seriousness, I hope more people participate; I was hoping this would be mildly fun, 'cause I've got an extra copy of terraria with no home.

I’ll probably throw in a pitch too, that is, if I have the time to write a good one that is. Currently a bit pressed for time due to exams.

With Neolander, jamesmiller5, cthom06 and me there will be 4 pitchers and 3 prises… that qualifies a competition, right? ;-) Not that I am in for the prises, I think everyone here in Sweden with a remote interest in Minecraft has already bought it. But looking forward to people commenting on my silly ideas.

append delete #16. cthom06

Not that I am in for the prises

I already own minecraft as well but I'm _really_ trying to get a friend to start playing but he won't or can't buy it (and I've got game ideas like crazy, some good, some awful).

append delete #17. Neolander

Of course I am. Soon publishing v1, should probably make it shorter afterwards. Like Martijn, I play more for fun and the pleasure of seeing how other people would view what I see as an awesome game than for the prizes, since I don't persistently play games on my computer anymore. Just like to finish one "cover to cover" from time to time, or have bursts of "gaming frenzy".

The game is about to survive various disasters. The game takes place in a number of places: Hotel/volcanic area behind, and the sea at front, marina, airport, city, big city, cruise ship / port, a town on the lake, amusement park / water park, metro station / city and more places.

At the different places it can occur different catastrophe. You never know what disaster that may occur before the last second. Starting with a small amount of time before disaster strikes. the game is in 1st person. You can see in front of you when you run and do things. In some of the disasters you get weapons with little ammunition, use it right to defend yourself. You can also pick up weapons. In some individual houses or areas with doors and windows can be barakated with a cabinet or similar. Almost everything in the entire game can be destroyed, from big buildings to almost very thing

Disasters: Tsunami (Tsunami brings boats and Cruse ships on the way to the site, earthquakes, floods (where cars and other things floating in the streets and houses can be torn away), rolling stones are blasted from the mountains and going to cause major damage , large insects, large Cruse ships uncontrolled and on the way into town at high speed, volcanic, aircraft that are heading to downtown / airport / buildings with no persons controlling it, installation hurried bombs that are placed around the buildings (it can be detonated or just blow up) the installation hastened the bombs going to hurt a lot and trap down buildings if they are not stopped, bombing planes which drops bombs (destroying large parts of the city), runaway subway that crashes in either the city or the metro station, dam will be sprung up and lots of water is on its way to the city and much more.

game can be played both online and single player.

In the different courses you can do different things. For example on the pitch with hotels on the beach you could take on the diving suit to go into the water, it may save your life or not.

The path "Port" when disaster 'tsunami' strikes, both large and small boats brought by the wave and thrown into the country. That will create great misfortunes on the house, other things. Nets everything can be crushed and destroyed, but almost everything can also duck into and hide themselves for disasters.

The game also plays with 4 players. On every track, it is the people walking around, they never know what's coming. But when disaster will begin to run and scream if they see the disaster then. Sometimes a alarm over the place that alerts her father as if the bombing planes coming. Disaster response animals, such as if a tsunami comes, birds begin to fly, and animals are completely wild.

You never know how the disaster might occur, not big on it. For example, a tsunami, you never know if it is mega big and visible.

There are different ways to play.

Good-for-nothing lurker over here! I could give it a shot. It sounds like something right up my alley, and it might give me an excuse to come out of the shadows and comment on other threads once in a while.

Now all I have to do is figure out what sort of idea to put down. I'm pretty paranoid about keeping ideas I intend to develop away from other people, so maybe something new. I've had too many good ideas that were realized by people who are smarter and have more free time than I do. :P

append delete #20. Neolander

@marcus : Very interesting idea ! But looking at the rules above, you should fine a name for it and create a dedicated topic instead of posting it here.

append delete #21. marcus

Hi, my name is Marcus tveit karkash and I am sorry that I did not read the rules

append delete #22. Neolander

I was saying that you should give a name to your game, not write down your own name :) And don't worry, it's not as if we're going to make a big deal of you not fully reading the rules at first because you were too interested in the competition. It just happens that putting game ideas in separate topics helps separating discussions related to each individual games and discussions related to the competition and its rules.

This post was deleted by its owner

append delete #24. marcus

Ok, than i will call the game "Epic Disasters" or "The laws of Disaster"

append delete #25. Kroc

Marcus, you need to post this as it’s own thread, and not in this thread if you want to participate in the competition. Go back to the index page, and use the input form there. Dem’s da rules.
